When I create a ketubah for my clients, I imagine where it will end up and how it will look. I'm picturing a woodland wedding a la Disney. Weddings are for childhood fantasies, right? Then clients send me their wedding photos and my imagination is blown. Just look!

The ketubah was SO stunning and many people commented how they had never seen anything like it! Thank you for everything and for your gorgeous contribution to our special day.
We will never forget it!!

This is a custom design ordered for the one year anniversary of Daniel & Amy Elias, who were married in September of 2013. Using photos of their actual wedding, Daniel asked for a simple papercut design of their special chuppah: the canopy was made of a family heirloom textile, and the chuppah's posts were decorated with the bride's bouquet and the groom's ring box.

Talk about Flower Power! From the honeysuckles to the Jasmine, each petal and leaf stands here as a symbol of true love and friendship. Naturally, it's called OUR WEDDING FLORA.
This one would fit in a secret garden just fine. Our Wedding Flora is 18X18" big and has a special detail that will be personalized for every couple - a hidden vine monogram of the couple's name. It's photographed here in silver and greys fit for a winter magic wedding, but bring the gold and greens, and the ketubah can take center place in a summer garden!

The ketubah includes the following flowers and herbs: water lilies, black eye suzies, morning glory, myrtle, glowing rods, daffodils, honeysuckles, ivy, lavender, basil, and yarrow. I'm pretty sure I got them all:)

As always, my availability dates are posted in the website sidebar and my shop announcement.
This is a case of 'From This, To That'.
In 2012 one of the biggest wedding trends was ruffles. In 2013 folk & tribal embellishments ruled. In that time I made the following papercuts inspired by the above photos. I wish I could do more of these. Any fashion related ideas?

Lauri & Isaac tied the knot last summer in a beautiful outdoor location, under an oak tree. They contacted me in January of 2013 to make an invitation set for them that will hint at their wedding's elegant nature theme, and later for a matching ketubah.
As you can summarize from the above photo, their wedding was something the like of which is only seen in magazine spreads, really spectacular. No surprise, it's also been featured on the wedding blog JUNEBUG WEDDINGS.
I went through several drafts for the invitations. I cringe at some of the drawings, but Lauri was patient and clear about what she wanted. The brief was to include an oak tree, lavender, and their wedding colors where possible (organic green, pacific blue, and champagne). The cards ended up being nature white with green, with personalized envelopes in blue and green. Below are some of the cards I drew. Can you guess which she picked?
Lauri & Isaac chose the OAK TREE heirloom ketubah for their wedding. They customized it by adding an Olive Green background, and having the text printed on the same layer as the papercut. You, too, can purchase the ketubah from my shop.

The Ketubah ceremony, where just our immediate family gathered before the ceremony to share advice and offer their blessings was the most special part of the day. In that moment it was clear that we were now one family.

Eric & Angela commissioned me last summer to create a ketubah inspired by Texas, the backdrop to their love story. They asked the design be 'tranquil' and 'serene', and to include a tree and flowing river. I waned to feature those red mountain ranges I remember from classic western movies, so that was my own personal touch, which the two thankfully approved of. They wanted the biggest size of papercut I can make, which is 16X24 inches. Things are big in Texas!
I sent them two sketches, and they ended up with a version of the one on the right. The ketubah was designed around the three languages of the custom text: English, Hebrew, and Spanish.
CLIENT FEEDBACK:
It is I N C R E D I B L E !!!!
The more Angela and I look at your handiwork, the more we love it. (And we thought we loved it before.) We are so glad you were the one to make this custom heirloom that will be
with us the rest of our lives.
Your creativity, artistic eye, and execution of the design is breathtaking. We thank you, sincerely, for how easy it was to work with you as well. The response time, the ease of going through the design phase, and your own enthusiasm in all those steps made it a joy to go through the process with you.

Allison commissioned me in late July last year to create a special ketubah for her and her fiance Marc based off her gorgeous letterpress invitation.
We went through 3 revisions but eventually found just the right thing. The ketubah is a special size 20X20" big, and paired with ivory and hand-painted metallic gold papers. Forgive my bad photo quality below:

Sister to this custom commission, the MOON & FLOWERS ketubah was inspired by the fantastical outdoor celebrations that serve as the backdrop to the classic love tales in Midsummer's Eve and The Great Gatsby.

Jaime & Nicholas commissioned me for a papercut ketubah featuring lavender, texas bluebonnets, indian paintbrush, california poppy, and drummond phlox flowers. They were keen on a white-on-white effect (the white background isn't pictured), and with the delicate flowers loosely overlapping the text layer, the subtle shadowing is beautiful!

In the Jewish culture pomegranates symbolize beauty, wisdom and above all prosperity. Not coincidentally, pomegranates are a popular choice in Judaica art.
When I was a small child, there was still a fading tradition to exchange Sweet NewYear cards at Rosh HaShanah. The cards always featured quaint little nostalgic scenes of children and gardens and cherubs and flowers. They were so strangely foreign, with papercut details and glitter embellishments. Anyone else remember them? By the time I was in 6th grade they were history. I still think of those cards, though. They were my first glimpse of grossly decorative art that featured Jewish elements but wasn't Judaica art in the least. Not any style of Judaica that I was familiar with anyways. Nouveau Judaica, as it were?
My point is, I think that's what I strive for. A decorative art influenced by my culture and religion but with a modern, global twist to it. So even if a local won't see anything familiar about my papercuts, others will read some visual cues in them and attribute them to modern Judaica in some small way.
And on that note, I'd like to introduce the Pomegranate Garden ketubah! This design is a departure from my usual work, leaning more towards the traditional decorative style, but there's a beauty in this full symmetrical pattern that's mirrored in the symbolism of the pomegranates.
Being 16X16 inches big, this ketubah is based on an older, smaller design I made two years ago. The couple who contacted me to create this larger version loved the ivory and gold coloring of my Seven Species ketubah, but colors are completely customizable for each couple.
